How do discount calculations work?
A discount is a reduction from the original price expressed as a percentage. This calculator handles two common scenarios: finding how much you save on a known original price, and working backwards to find the original price before a discount was applied. Both calculations are instant and show the savings amount, final price, and original price in one view.
Discount formulas
Find savings: Savings = Original × (Discount / 100); Final Price = Original − Savings. Example: 25% off $120 → savings = $30, you pay $90.
Find original price: Original = Sale Price / (1 − Discount / 100). Example: sale price $75 after 40% off → original was $125.
Common use cases
Shopping: A jacket is marked 25% off at $120 — how much do you actually pay? Use "Find savings" mode to see $90. Reverse pricing: You see a sale price of $75 after 40% off — what was the original price? Use "Find original price" mode to find $125. Comparing deals: Is 30% off $80 better than $25 off? This tool shows you the exact savings for percentage discounts so you can compare. Business pricing: Calculate wholesale cost from MSRP with a trade discount, or find the retail price needed to maintain margins after a promotional discount.
