What is DPI?
DPI (dots per inch) and PPI (pixels per inch) describe pixel density. 72 DPI is web standard; 300 DPI is print quality; 600+ DPI is professional or fine-art print. To find DPI: divide pixel count by physical inches. Phones now hit 400–500 PPI; Retina displays use ~220 PPI at typical viewing distance.
Common uses
- Print prep — verify an image is high enough resolution.
- Photo gear — pick the right camera for required print size.
- Display design — pick assets for HiDPI screens.
- Scanning — choose scan resolution for archive quality.
