What is EXIF data?

EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) is metadata embedded in JPEG photos by cameras and smartphones. It can include GPS coordinates (exact location where the photo was taken), camera model, lens settings (aperture, shutter speed, ISO), date and time, thumbnail previews, and even the device's serial number. While useful for photographers, sharing photos with EXIF data intact can be a serious privacy risk — anyone can extract your home or workplace location from a casual photo.

Common use cases

  • Social media uploads — remove GPS and personal data before posting photos online.
  • Online marketplaces — strip location data from product photos so buyers can't determine your address.
  • Journalism — protect source anonymity by removing camera and location metadata from photos.
  • Legal compliance — strip personal metadata to comply with GDPR and other privacy regulations.
  • File size reduction — EXIF data (especially embedded thumbnails) can add several kilobytes to each file.
