How is fuel cost calculated?

Fuel cost depends on three factors: the distance you travel, your vehicle's fuel efficiency (how much fuel it uses per distance), and the fuel price. This calculator supports multiple unit systems — L/100 km (common in Europe), km/L (common in Asia), MPG US, and MPG Imperial (UK) — so you can use the units you're familiar with.

Fuel cost formulas

Using L/100 km:
Fuel (L) = (distance in km / 100) × L/100km
Cost = Fuel × price per liter

Using km/L:
Fuel (L) = distance in km / km per liter

Using MPG:
Fuel (gal) = distance in miles / MPG
Cost = Fuel × price per gallon

Cost per km: Total cost / distance
