What is GPA?

GPA (Grade Point Average) is a standardized way to measure academic performance. Each letter grade is assigned a numeric value (e.g., A = 4.0, B = 3.0) and weighted by the number of credit hours for that course. A 3-credit A contributes more to your GPA than a 1-credit A. GPA is used by universities for academic standing, honors, scholarships, and graduate school admissions.

GPA formula

GPA = Σ(grade_points × credits) / Σ(credits)

Example: Course A (3 credits, A = 4.0) + Course B (4 credits, B+ = 3.3)
GPA = (4.0 × 3 + 3.3 × 4) / (3 + 4) = (12 + 13.2) / 7 = 3.60

4.0 scale: A = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B− = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, C− = 1.7, D+ = 1.3, D = 1.0, F = 0.0.
5.0 scale: Used by some institutions for honors/AP courses, where A = 5.0 for weighted classes.

Common use cases

  • Current GPA — calculate your GPA for the current semester or cumulative across all semesters.
  • Goal planning — determine what grades you need in remaining courses to reach a target GPA.
  • Graduate school applications — most programs require a minimum GPA (commonly 3.0+).
  • Scholarships — many scholarships have GPA thresholds (3.5+ for merit-based awards).
  • Academic standing — check if you meet your institution's requirements for good standing, dean's list, or honors.
