How does number-to-words conversion work?

This tool converts numeric values into their written English representation. It breaks the number into groups of three digits (thousands, millions, billions, trillions) and converts each group separately, then joins them with the appropriate scale word. Decimal portions are converted digit by digit after the word "point". Negative numbers are prefixed with "negative". The conversion follows standard American English conventions.
