How does power conversion work?

Power is the rate of energy transfer per unit time. This tool converts through Watts (W) as the base unit. 1 watt = 1 joule per second. The SI prefixes scale linearly: 1 kW = 1,000 W, 1 MW = 1,000,000 W. Other units come from different measurement systems: mechanical horsepower (≈745.7 W), BTU/h from the British thermal system, and ft·lbf/s from the imperial system.

Unit reference

Watt (W) — the SI unit of power, 1 joule per second. Kilowatt (kW) — 1,000 W. Used for household appliances and electric vehicles. Megawatt (MW) — 1,000,000 W. Used for power plants and large installations. Horsepower (hp) — ≈745.7 W. Used for engines, motors, and vehicles. BTU/h — British Thermal Units per hour. Used for HVAC systems and heating. cal/s — calories per second. Used in thermodynamics. ft·lbf/s — foot-pounds-force per second. Imperial mechanical power unit.

Common use cases

Automotive — convert engine power between horsepower and kilowatts. HVAC — convert between BTU/h and watts for heating and cooling systems. Electrical — convert watts and kilowatts for appliance specifications. Engineering — compare power ratings across different unit systems. Energy — analyze power plant output in megawatts.
