What are timezones?

Timezones are regions of the Earth that observe the same standard time. The world is divided into 24 primary time zones, each roughly 15° of longitude apart, centered on the Prime Meridian (UTC±0) at Greenwich, London. In practice, timezone boundaries follow political borders rather than strict longitude lines. This tool uses the browser's Intl.DateTimeFormat API with IANA timezone identifiers (e.g., America/New_York) for accurate conversions that automatically account for Daylight Saving Time rules.

Common timezone abbreviations

UTC: Coordinated Universal Time (the reference). EST/EDT: US Eastern (UTC-5 / UTC-4). CST/CDT: US Central (UTC-6 / UTC-5). MST/MDT: US Mountain (UTC-7 / UTC-6). PST/PDT: US Pacific (UTC-8 / UTC-7). GMT/BST: UK (UTC+0 / UTC+1). CET/CEST: Central Europe (UTC+1 / UTC+2). JST: Japan (UTC+9). CST: China (UTC+8). IST: India (UTC+5:30). BRT: Brazil (UTC-3). AEST/AEDT: Australia Eastern (UTC+10 / UTC+11).

Common use cases

Meeting scheduling — find a time that works across different timezones for distributed teams. Travel planning — know what time it will be at your destination when you arrive. API & logging — convert UTC timestamps from server logs to your local time for debugging. Cron jobs — verify when a cron schedule set in UTC will fire in your local timezone. Live events — convert broadcast times for international sports, conferences, or product launches.
