How is typing speed (WPM) calculated?

WPM (Words Per Minute) is the standard measure of typing speed. The formula is: WPM = (Correct Characters / 5) / Minutes. The divisor of 5 represents the average word length in English (including the space after each word). This is called net WPM — it only counts correctly typed characters. "Gross WPM" (which counts all characters including mistakes) is sometimes reported by other tools but is less meaningful since it rewards fast but inaccurate typing.

How is accuracy measured?

Accuracy = (Total Keystrokes − Mistakes) / Total Keystrokes × 100%. A mistake is counted every time a wrong key is pressed, even if you immediately correct it. Professional typists maintain 95–99% accuracy. For most purposes, accuracy matters more than raw speed — a fast typist who makes frequent errors spends extra time correcting, resulting in lower effective throughput. Focus on accuracy first; speed follows naturally with practice.

Typing speed benchmarks

Hunt-and-peck: Under 30 WPM — looking at the keyboard, typing with 2–4 fingers.
Average: 40–60 WPM — most office workers and casual computer users.
Proficient: 65–90 WPM — touch typists who can type without looking at the keyboard.
Fast: 90–120 WPM — experienced professionals, programmers, writers, and journalists.
Expert: 120–150 WPM — competitive typists and court reporters.
World record: 212 WPM sustained — held by typists using specialized techniques and practice.
