How are these times calculated?
Sunrise and sunset are computed from the NOAA solar equations, which use the date, latitude, and longitude to determine the sun's altitude. Civil twilight ends when the sun is 6° below the horizon, nautical at 12°, astronomical at 18°. Golden hour is when the sun is between -4° and +6°, prized for warm light.
Twilight phases
- Civil twilight — sun 0° to 6° below horizon, plenty of light for outdoor activities.
- Nautical twilight — 6° to 12°, the horizon is still visible at sea.
- Astronomical twilight — 12° to 18°, the sky is fully dark for observing.
Common uses
- Photography — plan golden hour and blue hour shoots.
- Astronomy — find darkest skies for observing.
- Outdoor events — schedule around natural light.
- Solar power — estimate daily generation window.
