How does text to speech work?
This tool uses the browser-native SpeechSynthesis Web API. Your operating system provides the available voices — typically dozens in different languages and accents. The text is sent directly to the OS speech engine and never leaves your device. Adjust the rate (0.5x-2x), pitch (0-2), and volume (0-1) to fine-tune the output.
Browser support
- Chrome / Edge — full support, dozens of voices including Google online voices.
- Safari — full support, uses macOS / iOS system voices.
- Firefox — limited support, may need OS-level voices installed.
Common uses
- Accessibility — listen to written content while doing other tasks.
- Proofreading — catch typos and awkward phrasing by ear.
- Language learning — hear correct pronunciation in target languages.
- Content creation — preview voiceover scripts before recording.
Privacy
All speech synthesis runs locally via your browser/OS. No text or audio is sent to any server.
